Tourmaline has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and that hardness makes its durable sediment granule. It also includes a wide variety of different forms. Tourmaline has a prismatic crystal habit and often has obvious striations that parallel the long axis of crystal. It has a complex chemical composition.
Tourmaline have been produced in a wide range of colors such as red, pink, yellow, brown, black, various shade of green, blue and violet. Crystal with a pink center and surrounded by a green layer is called Watermelon Tourmaline.
Brazil has been the world’s leading source of Tourmaline for nearly 5000 years. The most important source of Tourmaline is in mines of Southern California. “Paraiba” is the most valuable Tourmaline. Tourmaline serves as a birthstone for the month of October and Tourmaline were known as an ancient times in the Mediterranean.
