About Moonstone
The name “moonstone” was given because the floating light resembles the glow of the moon through a thin cloud cover. This beautiful and intriguing adularescence is what makes moonstone the most popular gemstone of the feldspar group. It is not extremely hard and it cleaves easily, so care must be taken. Moonstone has Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5 so it can be scratched by many common objects.
Chemical formula of Moonstone is (Na,Ca)Al₁₋₂Si₃₋₂O₈, KAlSi₃O₈ and mineral class is orthoclase. Moonstone occurs in wide variety of colors such as white, gray, green, pink, blue, orange, yellow and brown. Sri Lanka is the most world’s most important source of fine quality Moonstones.
In many cultures Moonstone is a symbol of fertility. It serves as birthstone for the month of June.
